Statement

My work investigates power and the apparatuses — collective and individual — through which it operates. At its centre is the disciplined, socially coded body: the site where authority becomes legible. Looking at society as a family and the private as collective, my practice moves between performance, film, photography and installation, merging investigations of power, public and private, family rituals and collective archetypes. I reproduce the choreographies, gestures and aesthetic codes of cultural mythologies with a precision that is itself the method. Under a slow, cumulative pressure, aspiration ends by exposing its own architecture, and what presented itself as emancipation reveals the discipline that has always constituted it.

Biography

Born in Eboli (Salerno, IT) in 1978. Works and lives in Milan, IT.
Marilisa Cosello holds a University Degree in Cinema History from IULM in Milan, a Master in Photography from Noorderlicht School in the Netherlands, and studied under François Cheval at Musée de la Photographie Nicéphore Niépce in France. Initially trained in photography, fine arts and cinema, she spent five years as a news photographer before shifting to a conceptual practice.
Her work investigates power and the disciplined, socially coded body as the site where authority becomes legible, moving between performance, film, photography and installation. Looking at society as a family and the private as collective, her practice merges investigations of power, public and private, family rituals and collective archetypes. Her photographs, films and performances stage the body and society's archetypes to articulate political ideas, personal struggles, women's conditions and collective expectations.
She has exhibited in Italy and abroad, including M9 Museum, Venice; Museo Riso, Palermo; Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome; Musei di Santa Giulia, Brescia; Fotografie Forum Frankfurt, Germany; Circulation(s) Festival and Central Dupon, Paris; Kunst Halle West, Lana; Fotografia Europea, Reggio Emilia; Fondazione Francesco Fabbri, Pieve di Soligo; and Artissima, Turin. She is represented in Italy by Galleria Studio G7, Bologna.
