Statement
My practice moves between film, performance, sculpture and installation. It is defined by body participation and performance construction, activating a dialogue between history, culture and social structures.
Looking back on society as a family, and on private as collective, my practice merges different forms of investigation concerning power, overlapping public and private, family rituals and collective archetypes. The subject of my research is the political body and the impact of power dynamics on personal and communities’ history. My photographs, performances, videos stage the body and society’s
archetypes in order to articulate political ideas, personal struggles, women’s conditions, society’s expectations.
Biography
Born in Eboli (Salerno, IT) in 1978. Works and lives in Milan, IT.
Marilisa Cosello, born in Salerno in 1978, lives and works in Milan, Italy. She holds a University Degree in Cinema History from IULM in Milan, a Master in Photography from Noorderlicht School in the Netherlands, and studied under François Cheval at Musée de la
photographie Nicéphore Niépce in France. Initially trained in photography, fine arts, and cinema, Marilisa Cosello spent five years as a news photographer before shifting to a conceptual approach, driven by the realization that reality does not exist.
Cosello's contemporary practice is characterized by body participation and performance construction, fostering a dialogue between history, culture, and social structures. Her work delves into the themes of power, exploring society as a family and the private as collective, merging investigations of power dynamics, public and private spheres, family rituals, and collective archetypes. Central to her research is the political body and the impact of power on personal and community histories. Cosello's photographs, films, and performances stage the body and societal archetypes to articulate political ideas, personal struggles, women's conditions, and
collective expectations. Through her art, she examines how power shapes and influences both individual lives and broader societal narratives, creating a profound commentary on the interplay between the personal and the political. Cosello's works have been exhibited in prestigious institutions and events, including M9 Museum in Venice, Musei di Palazzo Pio in
Carpi, Museo Palazzo Riso in Palermo, BAM Biennale del Mediterraneo in Palermo, Palazzo
delle Esposizioni in Rome, Musei di Santa Giulia in Brescia, Fotografie Forum Frankfurt in Germany, Circulations Festival and Central Dupon in Paris, Kunsthalle in Lana, Fotografia Europea in Reggio Emilia, Fondazione Francesco Fabbri in Pieve di Soligo, and Artissima in
Torino.
